Challenges & Takeaways

This project was an excellent opportunity to explore working in a collaborative setting with some great minds. However, like any project with business objectives, we faced our fair share of challenges. I’d like to highlight some of them here:

Time Crunch - As a team, we originally explored many possibilities to further enrich the experience of the website. These possibilities included:

conducting usability testing for the site

adding advanced interactions and animations to the prototype

adding many additional features/pages.

However, with the time constraint that we had we were left with no choice but to create and give the client a document for handoff to the next design phase with recommendations on how to proceed further

Scope Creep - There were many requests for different UI updates and changes throughout the project, it was important for us as a team to be mindful of time constraints. To compromise, we proposed a handoff document that would record any features or updates that would be best scheduled for a future update

In conclusion, this project was a great opportunity to work collaboratively with a client on a project that has a lot of potential. I learned a lot of new soft and hard skills in the process from the client and my team members.

If I had to define one main lesson that I learned from this project, its the value of being a team member who can go with the flow, lead when necessary and follow when necessary. This mindset helps foster a collaborative atmosphere where many different personalities can think creatively and contribute freely without any type of friction.

BEFORE

This section was moved down below the quiz feature to allocate for the adding of a "trending deals" section

This section was meant to be seen first by users based on the assumption that they would be new to the area they are searching in

This search seemed too vague when we considered the work that would need to go into making and coding for certain keywords.

AFTER

The client communicated they would rather have a "trending deals" section placed here to attract value seeking users

We decided to add a more intuitive set of search bars here. The user still has freedom to type but other fields like location and date entry are more limited to valid entries. (I.e. detecting the city while its being typed)

BEFORE

There is also no way to add something to an itinerary which is a big feature the client wanted implemented

There is also no way to save or bookmark any of the search results here in case the user wanted to view them later in one space

We also noticed there wasn't any way of filtering results on this page.

This could be a pain point for users and would need to be addressed

We realized early on that the absence of a search bar would most likely prove to be a nuisance to users

This old logo was changed mid-phase and needed to be swapped

AFTER

We decided to implement the same search bar from the home page into all results pages to add ease of navigation

A collapsable map view was added to the results page with custom map pins components we created.

The goal of this being to add convenience to the experience for the user as they plan itineraries

We decided to implement a sidebar filter to this page and any other pages where the use would apply to help the user narrow down their search

A "like/heart" button was added as well as the utility to save or bookmark any results for later

Amongst the deliverables we received, we were able to utilize elements from previous design phases like a style guide for the design as well as other pieces of user research that were provided like personas to help us understand and empathize with the potential user base of the site more.

These were helpful in staying consistent with the brand identity when it came to adding new components or elements to the UI design system

Upon viewing the link that had been shared to us, the team viewed and looked over the current state of the project that was left over from design phases 1-4

The project has had multiple design phases, which means that at this point in time the company had brought in multiple teams to complete multiple deliverables for this site with some being successful and some being scrapped.

The state of the project in our hands was best described as in between a completed draft and the refinement stage.

Upon inspection, my team and I found many pages and different bits and pieces of projects that didn’t seem to add up and were filled with many inconsistencies in the UI

We received a more than a few versions created by previous design phases. But we noticed some problems right away:

  • Many clickable links were dead ends

  • So many of the screens were stuck between being wireframes and being high fidelity

  • Many screens were inconsistent in resolution so they would not be able to interact well together visually

  • There was a lack of icon and components and inconsistency with formatting things like button padding and icons

The main objectives for the team were assigned and defined by the client as such:

  • To take deliverables and information gained from the client to update the UI and create a clickable prototype that is presentable to potential stakeholders

  • Integrate logical flows and interactions with existing screens provided by the company

  • Implement animations in the UI to help pages come alive

  • Uncover prototype dead ends and move the existing prototype into a functional status for the client

In the current travel market industry space, there isn’t really a do-it-all website that combines great travel deals with the ability to set up and save an itinerary for the user’s convenience. DoYouWeekend is a platform that aims to do just that and fill the gap!

The preliminary state that the website design was presented to us in had a lot of potential but needed a lot of work and organizing to become a clickable prototype that was capable of being presented to stakeholders.

DoYouWeekend’s aim is to give users a reliable way to plan and arrange an itinerary while also being able to save money. The platform’s website is currently in Design Phase 5 for their UI.

How might we build a prototype, to showcase to stakeholders, that is interactive and packs many features in it that aid the user such as:

  • Access to create and edit an itinerary

  • Easy access to what to see, what to do and what to eat nearby

  • A built out platform for merchants to post and manage deals towards users of the app
